Creating a headband

In this session we learnt how to create a headband that could be used as a base for a variety of headwear. We started by learning how to properly measure the head to find out how much wire we needed to cut. I then used pliers to create the correct shape and attached the ends ofthe wire together using a blanket stitch.

Cabochon rose

In this session we created a cabachon rose using fabric scraps and buckram. I started my zigzag stitching wire to the circumference of the buckram base. I used scraps of my fabric ,cut on the bias, and positioned them in triangles. With every scrap of fabric I covered the last and secured around the edge with stitch.

Working with sinamay

Sinamay is a fabric woven in the Philippenes, made from the stalks of abaca trees. It is used in hat making to block hats and trims. Here, I have experimented this using a block and hatmaking pins. I used steam to soften three layers of sinamay and used the blocks to mould it into a shape i was happy with. I then cut into the shape and sewed wire into the rim of the sinamay.
